Controlling Category Event display

Working to display events by category. Currently controlling the category list with a custom page template, but when the #_CATEGORYLINK is clicked, a page is created with content defined by the “Single Category Page” setting.
How to associate a page template with the generated page?
EG: Per the installation, the Categories page was created as a child of the Events page. I have associated a custom ‘Event Categories’ template with the Categories page. Works fine. But when the a category link is clicked, a page URL is created /events/categories/brewer that is no longer associated with the the custom template, rather falls back to the default page template.
