When I click “Read More” on a post it opens in a page that seems to use a default page layout, having the sidebar, title bar etc. visible. I do not have those on any other page.

I have a theory that the theme has a default page defined which might be this but I cannot find where in the customizer or settings that it is.

It seems that controlling the layout of the Read More page would be a common task, but I’ve not found the magic search term. What do I need to do to control the layout of the Read More page ?

    Thanks
    Kent

  • Hi Kentor,

Wordpress has a default page for blog, where, if you assigned this as a blog page, by default all posts will show up and usually by default have a sidebar. Controling this layout is indeed theme related. I can see in your sourcecode you are using my favorite OceanWP theme.

You are very lucky, because OceanWP lets you controle your blog pages and single post pages via the customizer. You can even chose to remove the sidebar etc.

    Hope this helps?

    Hi Annie,

    Thanks for the information.
I made a new page, https://www.craftypots.studio/blog/ without a sidebar or page title.

Then I went to Settings/Reading and chose that page under the “Posts page” setting, and saved the changes. However this has not affected where the Read More link displays the posts. Is there anything else I need to do ?

I found the Single Post entry in the Customizer and was able to affect some of the elements on the Read More page.

In order to turn off the page title, I had to go to Posts in the dashboard and turn it off like I have to do on all new pages. That is going to be very tedious over time. There must be a way to make WP create new pages and posts without title and sidebar by default ? How do I set the “default” default for new posts and pages ?

It doesn’t seem like the “Posts Page” has any effect, but I think I’ve made some progress. In Elementor Settings I checked “Posts” as well as “Pages” and then I was able to use Elementor to add things to the page that is displayed when I click Read More.

So, some progress has been made ??

    Thanks
    Kent

    Kent and Annie:

Thanks for sharing your wisdom and experiences here – allowing me to LEARN!

Kent, upon first glance, I am left with the question if your focus is on creating

    a) a website (using pages and its navigation structure via “menus)
    or
    b) a blog (using posts, and the unique archiving features that organizes them according to timelines and across categories and subcategories

Looking at your site, Kent, it seems you are mixing the two (which I am also often doing)…but what I am learning here is to be clear about “apples and oranges”. – Posts are really designed to publish articles, and to create directories to find them, often through widgets in sidebars and footers typically. And of course the “comment” fields, to offer interactivity.

What I wonder too is, how specifically I am creating a “default” post page, and choose it each time I create a new post? – In elementor we can create a “custom post”, safe it as “template”, and then “install” it with each new post. Is that the same as “using a “custom post template”, and requires an installation in “elementor editor” interface when a new post is open?

It has taken me a while to even know enough terms to talk about this, so your input is appreciated!

    Peter

    Hi Peter and kentsor!

First of all, WordPress was/is a tool that was mainly created as a blog cms.
Through the years, WordPress evolved into a full-fledged website + blog platform, that is even capable to have Woocommerce ecommerce in it too.

    PAGE TITLE

Page title shows up by default and need some css to turn it off everywhere.

As you are using OceanWP, there is no need for extra css nor do you need to disable that on every page or post. Disabling page titles globally, with Ocean WP is as simple as going to customizer> general options> pagetitle and choose style “hidden”.

If for some reason you would like a page title to show on a particular page only, you can do so on that page in edit mode, scroll down to the OceanWp options and choose to show page title there.

Actually these questions are not Elementor, but in this case, OceanWP questions.

It can get a bit confusing, as Elementor sometimes overlaps or has similar options too.
Me, I prefer to stick to the theme options first ( OceanWP ) and only use Elementor for things the theme does not offer already. In costumizer> general settings, you can determine the default layout, and then change it per page if you like too.

I suggest you watch/read some video’s/tutorials on how to fully take advantage of OceanWP’s settings.
