• I started a page using the gutenberg editor and while I do have a lot of excitement for the new editor, after fully laying and formatting out a restaurant menu page compared to using the classic editor, I have realized using gutenberg for this page was a bad choice.

This is because the block editor takes a long time to edit content, it’s very laggy, requires many mouse clicks just to update basic text blocks, sometimes produces unintended issues that are only resolved by deleting and recreating the block, and for basic content purposes it is turning out to be unintuitive for clients.

I would like to convert this page with about 50 lines of paragraph text blocks into a classic editor page or single classic editor block.

Is this possible or am I out of luck?

    Thanks!

  • Hello, have you tried deactivating the Gutemberg plugin? And do not forget to change it in the settings: “Replace Gutenberg with the classic editor.”

I’m relying on gutenberg on other pages, so that wouldn’t work in my case. I’m looking for this kind of control at the post/page level if possible.

In my case it works very well, I adapted well to the gutemberg

    That’s nice to hear.

Anyone know if you can convert a bunch of gutenberg text blocks to a classic editor block, and if so what the process is? Thanks.

I can not say that. I know you can click on “classic editor” and enter more information in classic mode

    Hiya,

So by default, new editor content is not backwards compatible, we can not guarantee for anything here.

If you remove the HTML document line (<!-- CONTENT HERE -->) in text/code view, and then save it, it’ll be treated as classic content.

Again though, this comes with no guarantees, and may cause issues with content.

Good to know, I’ll give that a try. Thanks for the insight!

If you are using the new editor and want to change the block type, hover over the icon in upper left of block in question and it should switch to the change type icon, which you can click and then select the type you want.

Thanks @pbarthmaier, there is a very limited set of options for converting a paragraph block to another block. Unfortunately there is no option to change the block type to Classic Editor.

This is by design, the Classic Block is a fallback for old content, and not intended or recommended for general use ??

    Understood.

I think there is utility in a large block of text (not forcing a new one for every paragraph in certain instances basically) that contains multiple paragraphs. Especially if say you have 12 paragraphs and no images, the simplicity and speed at which you can edit in the classic editor (and classic editor block) is a big improvement when I compare the workflow of managing content for 2 similar pages, one done completely in new blocks, and then one created with only the CE block.

If anyone comes across a different solution for large content blocks that can contain multiple paragraphs of text in one block, I’m very interested in learning more.

    Thanks everyone for chiming in!
