• Hi there,

I’ve got a website which is causing me a dilemma – I’m hoping someone can help.

Currently I’ve imported my customer’s catalogue pages into the site as PDF attachments. This works ok, however as other people have found I can’t find a plugin which lets users effectively search the content of the PDFs, the closest I’ve come is to use a Google custom search, however displaying third party sites in the results is no good for a commercial website.

The other option I’m considering is converting all the PDF pages to standard WordPress pages, and I was wondering if there is a plugin that can do this automatically.

Put simply, I’d be grateful if someone could advise me if there is a plugin that can search PDF attachments properly yet, or if there’s a plugin that would convert all the PDFs, while keeping the layout of the pages.

    Many thanks.

  • If it is possible to do such a thing, I have never heard of it. Typically, website pages and .pdf documents are two entirely different forms of media. It is totally possible to replicate your documents in html and CSS, but it requires a skilled designer/developer, and I don’t know about any easier solution.

It will be a lot of work to convert to HTML which we could do but I doubt the client would want to pay for it!

The ideal option would be a search engine which manages pdf attachments. Google Custom Search handles this fine but includes sponsored 3rd party listings in the free version. I’m surprised that there isn’t a WordPress plugin which can handle this yet.

Well, I can’t really help you too much. You’re looking into doing something that i’ve never done myself. Good luck though.
