Convert to base currency on Checkout

Is it possible to convert the price to base currency on the checkout page?
Our gateway only allows single currency and while the plugin work fine on the frontend… the amount passed to the payment gateway remains the same…. so GBP1200 becomes US$1200
will appreciate if anyone can advice on how to handle this.
