Using the Classic Editor, I created a post with an h3 heading in it, a paragraph of text and then another paragraph, with an image as its content.

Using the Gutenberg editor, I tried clicking on ‘convert to blocks’ and nothing happens. How do I get this function working? I don’t get any indication of an error.

    Hi,

I’m not able to replicate this issue, could you share a little about your setup, what OS and browser are you using (https://www.whatsmybrowser.org is a great tool for browser information), and what other plugins and themes are you using?

    I am running
    Windows XP using XAMPP
    wordpress 4.9.7
    php 5.3.5
    gutenberg 3.3.0
    theme Atomic Blocks

    plugins active
    Atomic Blocks
    Classic Editor
    Display PHP Version
    Gutenberg
    Gutenberg Block Unit Test

other functions seem to work in the Gutenberg editor as expected.

I would expect the conversion to add the comments lines before and after the HTML element, and the third paragraph with an image within it to be converted to the figure HTML element.

I’m afraid I don’t have a Windows XP machine to test with any more, but given it’s been EOL for a while I don’t think we’ll be putting a lot of effort into testing anything against that platform, I’m still unable to replicate the issue you have with those plugins on my own machine though.

I don’t imagine that there are a lot of us XPers out there, but it is doubtful that I am the only one. In that the other functions in Gutenberg seem to work ok, then I would need it proven to me that this particular function does not work in XP. When I can afford a new computer, then I will get one. Until then, this is what I have to play with.

Should the ‘convert to blocks’ button link to some code to execute the ‘convert to blocks’ function? perhaps if I can show this, and there is some reason that this is not happening, then I can take corrective action.

Where does a general user like me get support for gutenberg if needed? I and other users will run into problems like this and will need support to get this product working as it should, and right now I don’t see any general support forum out there for me. Something other that the support area for the plugin is needed.

discovered that the ‘convert to blocks’ option works on my test system in Firefox 52, but not in Chrome 49.

On my XP system, Chrome will no longer update to newer levels, I think Firefox is close to doing the same with new levels of the browser. I know that CSS Grid is not supported in my Chrome browser, but is in Firefox 52.

Does Gutenberg have minimum software and hardware levels for operation?

The Gutenberg minimum requirements follow the general core rules, although that doesn’t help in your case here unfortunately.

We support IE11 as the last “fixed” browser version, other than that with all the other browsers that fluidly update automatically (Edge, Chrome, FireFox etc) we officially support “the latest version -1”, so for chrome that would be 60 or above at this time.

I would say it’s not a major issue, since you are able to use Gutenberg, you’re just not able to convert existing content into blocks. This is an acceptable drawback in a scenario where unsupported software is considered.

As for where to get support, you are in that place, these are the support forums and our volunteers are preparing for the potential influx of users.

OK thanks for your reply Marius.

I just dabble in wordpress so it is not critical for me to do anything with it. I realize and accept that the hardware and software I am limited to using may introduce such situations like this. That I have to live with until I can upgrade my system.

Note about the convert function: the heading and paragraph converted to the block format OK, the paragraph with the image as content did not.

The image’s alignment (alignleft) was transferred to the figure element, however the image’s width field was deleted in the transfer to a gutenberg block. This resulted in the image being displayed as a full width block, when the image should have been floated left and the following paragraph should have flowed up and around it. Not quite what is intended in displaying the content.

That is an odd scenario indeed, I know we’ve got some fixes for the next version relating to Windows and various browsers on it, so if possible you could see if the upcoming 3.4 makes it a bit more usable for you?
