• When I used WP to set up my blog on a server using my own domain name about 10 months ago, I set my permalinks for the default option (?p=123), which I like. The 3+ years of posts on my “old Blogger” blog used date and name based permalinks and, thus, were imported that way.

Now, if someone clicks on one of the old Blogger links in a post on the current blog, they go to the old blog, get forwarded back to the current WP blog and get the main page because the WP and Blogspot permalinks don’t match.

I don’t recall if I could have converted the Blogspot permalinks when I imported them under the then-current version of WP and, if there was, I didn’t grasp the current problem. That said, is there any way to now convert the “old Blogger” permalinks to the default permalinks I now use without finding and editing each individual link?

  • Are you talking about links within posts that you set up yourself? Like linking one post to another post within your blog?

If so, one way to do this would be to download the SQL file and open it in a program that has Find / Replace. That would make it somewhat easier, though honestly if you’re going to stick with page ids you’ll have a pretty hard time with this in general, I’d imagine.

The other option would be to visit Options -> Permalinks and specify a custom permalink structure that matches your blogger style.

    See Permalinks for more information.

clicknathan: I am talking about links to other posts in the blog. Since I’m a techno bonehead, if I attempt to download the SQL file, can I edit it and upload it, overwriting the old one, and things will look okay (assuming I don’t make any other changes)?

HandySolo: Problem is that the “old Blogger” Permalinks all contain “blogspot.com,” something I presume I wouldn’t want in my WP permalinks.

So you want to have your old name/date permalinks redirect to the new ?p=123 permalinks?

Personally, I think you should switch wordpress premalinks to a name based format, I think you get better SEO that way (not sure)

But to do what you want, check out Dean’s Permalink Migration.

I posted about it here on my blog:
