My WordPress installation automatically upgraded to 4.4.2. Now when I go to login, it just loops me back to the login form (and shows this: “Prove your humanity: 10 + 10 =”). I cannot login to the admin panel.

In my trouble shooting, I have tried to:
    – revert back to the default theme
    – turn off all plugins

When I do that, when trying to login again I get the error “Cookies are blocked” and it will not let me login. But my cookies are on – and another WordPress installation on my same server which has not been upgraded to 4.4.2 still works. And yet another installation on my server also got upgraded to 4.4.2 and is experiencing same issue.

Not sure where to go from here. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

  • Hi,

I found this on the forum, does any of it apply to your situation?

thanks for helping, but no it didn’t apply. i looked at that thread and didn’t apply to me.

I would contact your host. I believe sometimes Varnish can be an issue on some web servers dependant on the setup.

Is there any errors in your hosting log that might be relevant?

    (@maestro42)

    I don’t use Varnish.

I’ll check my hosting log. What would I ask my host to do or look for?

No you host will use Varnish! Thats what to ask your host about.

ah ok – i’ll try that. thanks for your help!!

Nae probs, report back with what they say.

I have a shared host – and they do not use Varnish.

so now not sure what to do… I guess next step I could backup and try to install a fresh install with a fresh database etc.

Specifically Artems response and those after, see if that works

thanks, I had seen that thread before but wasn’t sure if it helped. When I do what is suggested by Artem here is what my headers say:

his post was 2 years ago so not sure what changed. I don’t see, however, a “domain=\” part, but not sure if this changed since then.

my host is kinda clueless. but one thing I did notice is that I recently changed hosts. My new host, I have a reseller account to make the separation of my different sites easier. So the mysql database for this site is under my main account. However, the actual files for this site are under a “separate” hosting account. So the database is point to my main hosting account and the website and files are under a “resold” account -but all on the same shared server. This shouldn’t matter, I wouldn’t think. The wp-config.php file is pointing to the database.

Could this be the culprit? I may have to export the database and create new one on the separate domain hosting account and see if that helps.

    Thread Starter maestro42

    (@maestro42)

I moved the database to the same “sever” setup as the shared resold account domain. Changed the correct database and user in wp-config.php – did not solve problem. Changed to default theme and no active plugins. Still getting the cookies are blocked error.

Guess my next step to troubleshoot is backup everything, delete everything, and try a fresh install to see if that cures it.

    Thread Starter maestro42

    (@maestro42)

I deleted all files. Created a brand new database and did a fresh install. That worked. Not sure why. But I will be re-uploading things one by one to see if I can figure out what the problem was. Will post back here if I find anything in case anyone runs into the same problem.

Mmmm very strange indeed. Did you test the website for the cookie error in multiple browsers at all?
