Cool culture, fair pricing, but needs your time to save time
-
for various reasons multi site is not for me, but with 10 and growing sites, nor is managing them individually.
main wp is by far the best solution i’ve seen to fill that role.
TIME
i am at the early stages and know i’ll need to put in a good many hours to get everything singing, but looking at the features of the various extensions, i’d estimate a saving of 15-20 hours per month.
but it isn’t just 15-20 hours, it is 15-20 really dull repetitive and niggly hours. the worst 15-20 hours of the work cycle.
CONFIG/DEMANDS
the dashboard settings talk of lowering the default thresholds if you are on a basic shared hosting account. i have a siteground 3cpu 6gb ssd vps and main wp’s out of the box config and a few extensions have taken me from comfortably within thresholds, to brief but fairly frequent 503s. probably all well withing the vps capability, but will need some planning to load balance.
WISHLIST
with that particular point in mind, but also as i’d like it anyway, one for the wishlist if anyone from main wp reads this.
an extension that would allow me to see child site’s server and config side by side, their resource usage side by side. chron jobs schedule side by side. be a huge timesaver and stop a lot of headaches.
CULTURE
a good company culture in the software you use makes the desk a more acceptable place to be. you get good usable features in the free core and free extensions without getting plagued with upgrade notices or being lured into features to find hidden costs lurking. you don’t get 10 emails a day from a marketing database pretending to be someone called steve who has decided he is your best friend, and you don’t have to deal with over-app-ification or smarmy congratulation messages like the software is trying to be a bearded hipster cum barista. written documentation is good and well structured. in other words it is the complete opposite of adobe. microsoft and everyone else who thinks that those of us sitting at a workstation secretly yearn to be using a handheld device. we don’t. well i don’t. and i thank main wp for getting that side of things right.
