Smush is installed on a site I’m working on, which is running on WPMU…so I don’t have access to the plugins and some other stuff I’m used to having with my own WP installations.
And we need to add ALT Tags to all our images.
I can add them easily enough to the full sized images, but I also need them to be set on the resized/Smushed images as well.
    How do I access them?
All I can see are the lists of sizes of the smaller images, but can’t access them directly to set their ALT tags.
    https://prnt.sc/rhghlx
How can I set the ALT tag for all the small images to match the full size image?
    Thank you.

    Hello @westhillsweb

    I hope you’re well today!

Smush doesn’t change ALT or any other data/information of that kind and it also doesn’t interact with them in any way. I mean: it’s neither adding nor removing any editing/configuration options (unless we’re dealing with some unidentified-yet conflict).

I’m not quite sure, though, if I correctly understand the case. By default you can set ALT attribute value in Media Library for an image but that’s not separate per each “image copy of different size” – for full-size image, thumbnail etc.

Whenever an image is displayed on site using standard WordPress core methods, it would either “out of the box” take the ALT value from what you set in Media Library (regardless of the image size used) or it’s up to theme developer to make it use it.

Still though, by default there’s no separate “alt” settings for each “size” of an image even without Smush being used.

That said, if I misunderstood your question please correct me and I’ll see what could be done to help with the issue.

    Kind regards,
    Adam

I think you understood my question perfectly. I neglected to use the term “thumbnail” in my original question, but you got it right. Based on what you said, I think we are dealing with a theme that does not show the original image’s ALT tag when it shows the thumbnail.
On the other hand, maybe the thumnails were originally made some other way, because the actual thumbnail shown is named differently…and I’m not quite sure if this is something that Smush does or not.
Here’s a screen shot of the thumbnail image from Inspect mode:
    https://prnt.sc/ri5gxk
As you can see, the thumbnail name is: winetka-hotel-canoga-park-1120×593-350×185-cropped.jpg
And the original image is named: winetka-hotel-canoga-park-1120×593.jpg
Is this thumbnail the work or Smush or something else?
    Thank you.

    Hello @westhillsweb

You got that right. The 350×185-cropped part in the file name states that this is a thumbnail version of the original image.
So it seems that this the theme indeed, or whatever is adding this image like a plugin or page builder.
As mentioned by Adam above, Smush doesn’t interact with this. What it does is send each image (each thumbnail, one by one) to Smush servers, where they get optimized and sent back to your server in the same exact path it was. All remaining data like ALT value is stored in the database.
I’d rather contact theme authors about it, maybe they have some quick workaround.

    Warm regards,
    Dimitris
