• I prefer to compose posts in Word, particularly lengthy ones that take more than a few days to complete, and used to be able to copy and paste perfectly well into my “Add new post” screen. Since upgrading to 3.9, I can paste, but all the formatting is gone: paragraph breaks, bold/italics, text color.

I first noticed this months ago but had taken a break from blogging and couldn’t be bothered to dig into it – I just fixed my formatting and went on. I honestly thought that the issue might disappear with further WP updates, but here we are with 4.1 and I’ve still got the same problem. Have changed my theme at least a couple of times, too, most recently to Twenty Fifteen, with the same problem consistent.

I’m running Windows 7, Word 2013, Firefox, and YES, the “Paste as Text” button is toggled OFF. (If I toggle it on, I get the following message: “Paste is now in plain text mode. Contents will now be pasted as plain text until you toggle this option off. If you’re looking to paste rich content from Microsoft Word, try turning this option off. The editor will clean up text pasted from Word automatically.”)

Total BS – it does not “clean up” text pasted from Word. Any help? I can, of course, compose directly in “Add New Post” but I write more fluidly in Word and would love to find a simple fix for this.

  • Hey there,

Unfortunately, your problem is fairly common and well documented. You have a couple of options which are described in the links below. One is a method without needing any plugin. The other is a plugin that supposedly has an extra option that will help with this.

Hope one of these helps you:

    https://weblogs.about.com/od/wordpresstutorialstips/qt/PastefromWordtoWordpress.htm

https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/tinymce-advanced/ (user reported that with this plugin they were able to : “What I finally did was get the Tiny MCE Advanced plug-in, and check the “stop removing p and br tags” box. This also added several extra edit buttons that I needed. Now I seem to have what I need.”

Let me know if you have any questions!

I have just installed the Tiny MCE Advanced, which I had been avoiding doing because of the comments in other forum posts about it not working to fix this problem. (Forgot to mention that. But I am hoping that perhaps that referred to an earlier version of Tiny MCE.)

Will report back. And thanks very much.

By the way, the first link doesn’t seem to be applicable. Perhaps it takes the Tiny MCE for it to work.

    Hey there,

OK great. I hope that does work out for you. Happy New Year!

Nope, it’s still not working. All formatting is still removed, and while I can reformat in WP, there’s no point in it.

I may redownload Open Office Writer and see if I can use that instead of Word. I’m not always where I have internet access so that I can work directly in WP, and I often write posts over several days, so I’d rather work from a static, offline word processing program.

Incidentally, copying and pasting into a copy editor program such as Notepad removed the formatting, so there’s no point in doing that. I’ve been muddling along with reformatting for a good eight months now, so I suppose I can keep it up.

Dang thats crazy. Sorry to hear that! I personally never write posts that are so long that I can’t do in one sitting so I don’t have a solid suggestion for you. Hopefully, someone else may be able to help.

(@#&%)_B)(W, Open Office doesn’t work either.

My suggestion would be to just write inside WordPress to avoid the hassle and with WordPress’ new version the “distraction free” writing is pretty dang cool. Plus, provided you always save your draft (as you would in Word anyway) nothing would go wrong ??

    hoi mals,

if yoy want to copy paste why not use notepad.
Copy in Word –> paaste in notepad –> copy again in notepad –> and then paste in WP.
    Should work.

    grtz,

    jef

    Hey Jef,

I was going to recommend same thing but they mentioned this:

“Incidentally, copying and pasting into a copy editor program such as Notepad removed the formatting, so there’s no point in doing that.”

So apparently, that isn’t working either for them ??

I did it in a round about way that preserved most of the formatting.

Basically in Microsoft Word do “Save As” and then save it as type
    “Web Page, Filtered (*.htm; *.html)

And after that it will create a copy for you that looks the same as an htm file.

And from that copy you can paste into WordPress and it kept most formatting (with me at least it kept the line breaks and bold/italics and what not). Hope this helps some poor soul at least a little bit.
