• Hi,

I noticed in my Google search console that my website with the Astra theme performs very bad for the CLS (cumulative layout shift) metric of the new Google Core Web Vitals.

Upon investigating I found the issue is because the inline CSS has different values than the CSS file, resulting in layout shifts where e.g. the line height or font size changes while the page is loading.

See https://i.imgur.com/KEd0w8m.png for one example where the H3 font size is defined 3 times.

    My questions are:

    • Why are CSS parameters defined multiple times in different files (inline and in the css file)?
    • Any plans to fix this very soon?

    Thanks!

PS: The core web vitals kinda is the new page speed and is a Google ranking factor.

  • I also have CLS problems with Astra and have been waiting for an update for some time.

It would be nice to hear something new about an update.

    Thanks

    Hi @empirestate212,

We have this already on our to-do list as a high priority, though it won’t be included in the next release. I will ask you to wait patiently.

If you like, please open a ticket through our Support Portal so we can have a closer look at your site and might help you sort this out.

    Kind regards,
    Herman ??

I am also having CLS problems with Astra- it is the header and header menu that is shifting. I found that turning off the transparent header helps, but it only helps some of the time. Also, you can’t switch off transparent headers for your whole website, but can only do this on each individual post. That is a lot of work. I tried Astra support and all they did is confirm I had a CLS problem and say they are working on the CLS problems with the theme. I’m seriously thinking of switching themes. I have spent hours on this, but am reaching the end of my patience.

    Hi @shharding,

What optimizing plugins you are using on your site? And would you mind share with us your live site URL?

    Please let us know.

    Kind regards,
    Herman ??

I am also seeing CLS issues with astra that have not been resolved. I have submitted a support ticket and have received no guidance on a resolution.

These issues still persist. Some are simple fixes like max height and width on logos. Others are more complicated.

    A fix is desperately needed.

    Hello @thenerdynurse

We are unable to find the mentioned ticket with the WPorg username. Can you share the name/email ID used while opening the ticket?

So that we can take the conversation further, and also review any pending cases. We are almost in the final stages of reviewing all the concerns and release an update soon.

If there’s anything to be considered we will be more than happy to take a quick look.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Regards,
    Suman ??

    Hello @thenerdynurse / @nicoter and others

We found a related thread on the Facebook group with the discussion about the same.

While a quick update, our upcoming update scheduled to be released soon is focussed on reported issues related to the font size of the menu, headings and body should take care of them.

    Hope that helps. ??

I just wanted to add to this thread that I too am having major CLS issues with the Astra Theme on mobile. The majority of the issue does appear to be the nav-menu as well as the logo/site identity.

    Hi guys,

I posted a message in the same thread. Below is the previous message regarding the CLS issue in Astra.

    My previous message:

    Hi,

I am using Astra for the past 1 year. I too have a CLS issue.

After a small investigation, I found that Linking text, table of contents plugin, and website LOGO in header bar caused me CLS problem.

I tried the popular WordPress Table of Contents plugins. They are working without a CLS issue on my other websites. Using the table of contents plugin resulting me CLS around 1.7

In a few posts, I found that linking the text caused me a CLS issue. weird.

Today I just reset the font & font size as we get in default Astra theme. This avoided all the CLS issues.
