Our site is using the Genesis theme, the Twenty Thirteen theme, and a custom child theme. I did not build it, but am trying to learn some things in order to make improvements. I have been working on the search results. My problem is that no matter what changes I make to search.php or content.php, which the loop in search.php points to (both located in Twenty Thirteen), it doesn’t seem to make a difference. It’s like the search function is not using those pages (the results are not according to the code on those pages), but I can’t find anything else in any of the other themes. Can anyone point me to the correct place to be making these changes? Thanks!

  • What do you mean your site is using three themes at once?

There are three active themes, actually four (if you count Twenty Twelve). I did not build the site and am just learning WordPress, so I don’t fully understand the hierarchy relationship between these themes or what the developer did. However, Genesis is the parent and the custom theme is the child. How the Twenty Thirteen theme is incorporated, if at all, I’m not sure. Hence my question, if the only search.php I can find is in Twenty Thirteen and the code does not seem to match or effect the site, then where would I find the search functionality? I have searched line by line through every page of all themes, but can’t find what I’m looking for. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

I think you will find that the 2013 theme is merely installed on your site – not active. It is always good practice to keep a copy of the current default theme available on your site as having access to an original, unedited, copy of the theme is vital in many situations.

As you are using a commercial parent theme, you need to seek theme-specific support from the theme’s developer/vendor. We do not support commercial products here.

    EDIT – okay, esmi’s still faster than I am – LOL :).

It’s not possible to have more than one theme active at a time in a single installation of WP. Having the themes installed doesn’t mean they are active.

The only themes affecting your site are Genesis and the child theme – but you should not be making changes to the parent theme at all – so make any changes in the child theme.

For help with this question, StudioPress will be the place to ask – as we don’t have access to or provide support for commercial themes on these forums.

Thanks for the information, it helps me focus in on where to look. I will also ask the question to StudioPress. Have a great day!
