A few of our customers are getting a “could not retrieve order” error message when trying to place an order using PayPal.

This is the message report under the order notes:
“Could not process order. Could not retrieve order. Order status changed from Pending payment to Failed.”
    WooCommerce PayPal Payments 1.9.5
    WooCommerce 7.1.0
    Please can anyone help?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello @wangjibin

Thank you for reaching out to us, we are here to help.
There are 2 cases we are working on that could cause this issue.
    1) When you are filling in the checkout page billing details, and you press “enter” instead of the PayPal button, this error can occur. We just found this cause and have a fix ready to be added to our next release (2.0.0). If you want to test a package with this fix, you can reach out to us privately via these instructions.
    2) Other possible causes we are trying to uncover by asking merchants to use a package that should give us logs that show where the issue is caused. We are calling PayPal to get an order by ID with an empty string. Because that endpoint is called from multiple places in the code we have added a trace just before the call with the empty string, that way hopefully the logs will indicate from where are we calling it. If you want to help us out to gather these logs, please also engage us privately via these instructions so we can share the package with you.

Let me know if you have any more questions on this.

    Kind regards,
    Joost

I probably know what you’re talking about, but I don’t know how to do it. I want to know what I should do to solve this problem now.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello @wangjibin

The only option to get any improvements, would be to open a private engagement to us, so we can provide you with a package that has an improvement for this issue. Please follow these instructions in order to do so. This option could improve the situation, but we have not had many people test this package.

There is also the option to use a package for gathering more details on what is occurring, but this will not resolve the issue quickly for you.

    Kind regards,
    Joost

    Hello,

with the release of version 2.0.0 there should be significantly fewer instances of this issue. Any occurrences of this error, while using this version, will most likely be caused by the customer using an older/unsupported web browser.
If you encounter this issue for every payment that has been performed with the PayPal payment option, then your site (theme or other plugin) might be blocking our plugin from replacing the WooCommerce button with the PayPal button. You will have to perform conflict testing in order to resolve the issue.

For now, we will mark this thread as resolved, but we are still looking into improving our browser compatibility.

If you have an issue that does not fall under this category, please open a new support thread.

    Kind regards,
    Joost
