Counts displaying as part of text in excerpts

On my posts list page I get the normal / correct page views displayed below each excerpt. But I also get the same data included within the excerpt text itself.
I believe this is because automatic excerpts strip html tags before formatting for display, and therefore leave the pvc results exposed.
If it were just me I could probably remember to always create a manual excerpt, but my site is a multi-user environment so that’s less practical. Is there an easy way to suppress the PVC form auto-excerpts, or perhaps even all excerpts?
