Time and time again I find users are unclear about where to enter their coupon code when they’re on the CART. The checkout is much clearer, because the user has to click a button which reveals the field to enter the coupon code.

However on the cart, there’s just an empty field which for some reason, users cannot see.

I have multiple shops where users have had this issue. Is there a way to change the CART behaviour to match the CHECKOUT? Or is there a plugin to improve the UX?

    Hi there Rick!

Thank you for contacting us! ??

I understand the coupon field is not appearing as expected on the cart page.

The location and look and feel of the coupon form depend on the theme you are using. For example, on the Storefront theme, below is how the coupon form looks:

However on the cart, there’s just an empty field which for some reason, users cannot see.

Could you share your website URL so we can check what you’ve described?

It’s working as expected, it’s just that users get confused on the cart page. On the checkout page you need to click a button to reveal the coupon field, but on the cart the field is already visible, so users don’t see it. I’ve had multiple sites where clients tell me it’s not obvious enough to their users.

    Hi @rickblackdog,

Can you make a screenshot of how you see the coupon field on the cart page?

I recommend https://snipboard.io for easily sharing screenshots – please follow the instructions on that page, then paste the URL in this thread.

If it’s already visible in the cart then customers should see it but I understand it might be a bit hidden. Maybe you could use some CSS to make it stand out.

    Cheers.

Yes – this is the cart page users seem to have problems with:

Standard woo behaviour but could do with improvement so it’s consistent across all pages

    Hi again,

The “Apply Coupon” button is visible but the coupon field is a bit narrow. The theme controls the styling using CSS so you can reach out to your theme author that can assist you with customizing that to your liking.

I also found an interesting tutorial here on how to customize the shopping cart page if you are interested.

    Best.

I’m the theme author, I’m not talking about the layout particularly – the functionality is not consistent between cart and checkout. The checkout should have the same function as the cart where user has to click link to reveal field to enter coupon code.

Not sure how I can explain that more clearly

    Hi @rickblackdog

    Thanks for clarifying.

the functionality is not consistent between cart and checkout. The checkout should have the same function as the cart where user has to click link to reveal field to enter coupon code

Could you please check if the same happens when you temporarily change the theme to the default Storefront?

    * You can test this out on a staging site using a plugin like WP Staging, without affecting the appearance of the front end.

If the problem does not persist at that point, that would indicate it is not an issue related to WooCommerce. You would want to modify your theme, in that case.

Let us know how it goes.

You can read more about plugin and theme conflicts in our Self-Service Guide.

Again not a conflict, it’s the way woo is designed, I’m raising it as a UX issue which could be improved on.

    Hi @rickblackdog

It would be great to have you add this as a feature request, which is where developers go to look for future plugin features and improvements.

    Thanks
