• Recently I was helping my dad with his free website (.wordpress.com) and I was able to edit his single post template (using the full site editor and the “Appleton” theme) so that it has a “cover” block which has the option to “Use Featured Image” so the image for that post gets displayed in the Cover

I tried to do the same thing on my own self hosted site but the option “Use Featured Image” is not there.

I am using wordpress version 6.0.1 which is currently the latest version which I assume is what is used on the free wordpress.com sites

I am using the “Wabi” theme.

Does anyone know why I am missing this feature? is it because of the theme?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

WordPress.com doesn’t have feature parity with the open source version of WordPress: they add, remove or tweak features to suit their own needs.

I just installed the Appleton child theme (plus the required Blockbase parent theme) on a self-hosted WordPress site, but I didn’t see the “Use Featured Image” when I added a cover block to the single-page template.

So this might be a WordPress.com-specific feature.

I’m wondering if you could install Appleton on your self-hosted site to see if you’ll see this feature or not. Below are the direct download links to Appleton and Baseblock just in case you don’t find them in the WordPress dashboard (I didn’t)

    Blockbase-wpcom: https://public-api.wordpress.com/rest/v1/themes/download/blockbase.zip

I just tried switching over the 6.0.2 Alpha to see if it was a feature they are about to release but it’s still not there

I’m not super confident with manually installing themes and blockbases

Oh wait, the option is there! it’s just not displayed the same way. It’s just an icon instead of text

Can you please share a screenshot? You may use https://snipboard.io and share the link here.

I am having the same problem. Hosted self upgraded to 6.0.1 and using TwentySeventeen theme and the Preferences/Panels options for “Featured Image” is no longer there.

I have tried switching to other themes and nothing. I also checked functions.php, and
    add_theme_support( ‘post-thumbnails’ );
    is there.

@cesarpenafiel: Please start a new thread and describe your own problem. Don’t tag on someone else’s ticket.

what do you mean? Isn’t it exactly the same problem?

The symptom may be similar, but the cause (and solution) may be totally different… as you’re on different servers, running different sets of plugins, and probably different themes.

Think of this forum as a company’s internet support/ticketing system: every customer’s problem gets a new ticket issued, even if the same problem has been reported a thousand times already by other customers.

In any case, if you’re convinced your problem is 100% the same, then good news: here’s your solution, as reported by the thread starter above: “Oh wait, the option is there! it’s just not displayed the same way. It’s just an icon instead of text”.

    Good luck!

Wow! Seldom to see such an arrogant behaviour in a support thread, mr. Gappiah.
I can confirm that the issue described is a generic (and major) bug in WordPress 6.01. So, instead of giving “lectures” to all the people concerned, go make a report for the backoffice, and make sure this giant bug will be cleared soon. Thank you very much!
