I started using cover images (Gutenberg). For site styling I specifically use the title overlay (to explain why I use it).

GN snips the cover image to include just the mostly unstyled overlay text. It also includes the featured image. If I disable featured image, I still get the cropped cover image.

Is it possible to add an option to either include the entire cover image, or the option of removing it from the GN feed? I’m fine with either, though I suspect removing the cover image from the feed is the simplest choice.

    WordPress v5.5.1
    GN Publisher v1.0.9

  • Hi Ian,

Do you mind sharing the link to the GN Publisher feed you are using? I’ll take a look so I can see what is happening ??

    No problem. Link is: https://devoti.onl/feed/gn

However, I’ve moved domains to https://devotion.al/feed/gn and I’m not sure if that is experiencing the same issue.

In addition, as I added https://devotion.al (the new site) to Google News, however, there is now an option to check for duplicate images (which I don’t remember when I first added it). That seemed to work just fine without unchecking the featured image option.

    Chris:

Just an update. So, Google News does indeed strip out the cover image and text. However, I’ve also been using the GN feed elsewhere due to its formatting consistency (thank you for that) and the duplicate issue is there. What it does is show a snippet of the cover image that is just bigger than the text on the cover image.

For site formatting, I’ve disable the appearance of the featured image, and use the cover image as it has some formatting options that I don’t otherwise have.

I would like the cover image snippet to be removed OR have the cover image with it’s overlaid text rather than the featured image.

    The feed URL is: https://devotion.al/feed/gn

    Hi Ian,

I’m sorry I didn’t get back to you after your last post, missed it somehow.

GN Publisher will include the featured image and set it as the primary. Most sites don’t have both a featured and cover image.

The text overlay won’t appear as that is done by coding that is rendered in the browser and is not something that can be done through an rss feed. Even if it was, Google will crawl and index the image as an image and won’t include the overlay. The only option to display the text as part of the image on Google would be to include the text in the actual image.

For displaying on Google News and other Google products, Google will crop the image to whatever dimensions is needs for its layout.

I know that’s not quite what you are looking to do, but I hope the explanation helps,

Thanks, Chris. It does. Is there a way to remove the cover image from the RSS that you are aware of? I may have to rethink my format ??

Not from the rss as is currently,

Okay. Thanks, Chris. I’ll work on a different method. The beauty of WordPress is that you can tweak to your heart’s content.

Thanks again for this plugin. It’s greatly appreciated.
