Cover image blocks don’t have an HTML anchor

  • Hi,
    I’m writing a long page and making the titles of each section using a Gutenberg cover block.

    The visuals really help soften the impact of so much text.

    I’ve got a menu that shows the contents of the page, listing all the section titles, and for this I need assign an HTML anchor to the start of the section. Ideally I should be able to do this in the same way that I would with a Heading block, which has a field in the Advanced options to set the anchor.

    How can I do this best with cover blocks?

  • Hi, the easiest solution as of right now would probably just be creating a heading block above the section, inserting a space as the heading title and then setting the custom HTML anchor within that block. You can then link to it that way although there will be an empty space.

    I did create an issue about this with the Gutenberg team though here:

    So hopefully it’ll get added in the future!

    Hi, got a response from one of the Gutenberg contributors on the issue I created. If you install the Gutenberg plugin and activate it on your site (if you haven’t already) you can create a Group block, add a Cover Image block to that and set the HTML anchor for the Group block.

    So a better workaround in the meantime.
