• Do Fantastico installations of WordPress have known bugs that are impossible to fix? My webhost spend the past 3 days working on my Fantastico-Wordpress installation, experiencing an endless circles of problems and in the end, it ended up right back where we started with all the same problems it had in the first place. Nothing was achieved.

I once again cannot perform many of the Admin > Manage functions without getting:
“Sorry, you need to enable sending referrers for this feature to work.”

When I go to the wp-admin page, I am being taken directly to the Dashboard page without being prompted for my username and password.

After I uninstall my corrupted WP, should I consider doing a manual install of WordPress without Fantastico?
    Fred

  • You’ll have to (from cPanel) click on the MySQL databases icon. From the page that goes to, scroll down toward the bottom, you’ll see a link to phpMyAdmin. Click that. In the left frame on the page that opens, there’s a dropdown. Select the database in question. When the structure of the database loads into the right frame, you’ll see all of the wp tables. Below the database layout, to the left, there’s a link “check all” which puts checks in all the boxes next to the tables. Click that. There’s a dropdown labeled “with selected” – choose “drop”, and answer “yes” when you get asked if you really want to do this.

That leaves the database of the same name. Reenter the path to install.php in your browser addy bar, and you should be good to go.

I wanted to also mention it’s having a bunch of other problems.

When I went to /wp-admin/install.php, the following error occurred:

    Already Installed
You appear to have already installed WordPress. To reinstall please clear your old database tables first.

When I went to /wp-login.php?action=lostpassword to retrieve my password, since I was never emailed one for this install, the following error occurred:

Sorry, that user does not seem to exist in our database. Perhaps you have the wrong username or e-mail address? Try again.

Well, don’t mess with those until you drop all the tables from the database and do a real install.

It worked, but it looks like that wiped out my database. WP is working now, but all I’m seeing is “Hello World!”

How do I rebuild my database now so I can see my posts? I did download a backup copy in .sql format.

You have your database dump or backup on your hard drive, right? Probably a file name and the extension .sql. There are two ways to do this: easy, and hard.

We’ll start with “easy” and hope it works. Through cPanel, navigate to phpMyAdmin like you did earlier. Select the database in the dropdown. You won’t see anything but a text entry box in the right frame this time, and a message that the database has no tables. Select the “SQL” tab at the top of the right frame. This provides a screen with a text entry box, and a text entry field next to a “browse” button.

Click the browse button, and navigate (explorer-like) to where you have the database backup on your hard drive. Click on the file to highlight it, then click “open”. This inserts the filename into the text field. Now click the “go” button. This should import your backup dump into the new database.

Couple things: if your database is fairly large (like over a third of a meg or so), the easy way may not work. And if whatever maybe your host did screwed the database too, it’s probably not going to work either.

[I’ve got to be offline now for a while, if it turns out this has to be done the hard way, I’ll try to get back with you on it later tonight or first thing tomorrow.]

I got it to where the database is showing “No tables found in database” now. There’s a small text box in the large green right window. “Name” “number of fields”

Okay, one last quickie before these people arrive: before you can follow the instructions in the previous post, you’ll have to drop the current tables again. THEN start with the previous post, and see if easy will get it. Post back, and after they leave, I’ll check back to see if you’ve had any luck.

I got rid of the tables this time. I had to drop them a second time.

I successfully uploaded my backup copy of the database file I save, but some new problems surfaced. When I went to my wp-admin page, it re-prompted me for my username and password, and when I entered those, I got “Error: Wrong username.”

When I attempted to retrieve my password, this error occurred.

“Sorry, that user does not seem to exist in our database. Perhaps you have the wrong username or e-mail address? Try again.”

I think my database might be corrupted.

    Success – I think!

    https://www.clean-credit.org/blog

I needed to drop all the tables except for posts to get it to work. WordPress automatically re-executed install.php emailed me a new password.

(You’re in luck, they’re not coming after all! Well, I’M in luck too – wasn’t in the mood….)

Okay. There’s a tutorial here on how to reset your password in the database: https://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/phpmyadmin/. I’m referring you to this tutorial because I’ve never had to do this myself, so it will be more effective if you use podz’s tutorial.

Then if you’re still having problems, I actually have another option. Post back….

I’m happy with the password WP assigned to me, but I would like to be able change the password of my database to something more secure, although my webhost told me this is not possible.

*rolls eyes* Friend, you REALLY need to get a better host. That’s for another day though….

The tutorial is simply to reset your password as “admin” so you can access the database in its current state, so you can make wp into a viable blog again. Right now, you can’t access your blog, right? So using podz’s tutorial simply resets “admin’s” password so that you can obtain normal wp access.

If you REALLY want to change your mySQL database password to something more secure, as I said, we can deal with that at a later time.

My blog is working fine now. I think I fixed the problem. If this was an extensive database, I might have a real problem.

That’s great! What did you do? (This is so the next poor guy with the same problem will find this thread when he searches…. we hope….)

In other words, there’s no such thing as too much information….

When I was in MyPHPAdmin, I tried dropping all the tables that didn’t contain anything essential, leaving just posts remaining, then I reexecuted wp-admin/install.php
