• I am a new WP user so very much to learn. When I set up my first website pedroduino.com and I accessed the Hostgator cPanel I would see my site in the left hand pane of the cPanel. I then tried to add two other sites to the hosting service, one is now registered (pedrosdigitalsolutions .com) and another unregistered (pedrodigitalsolutions.com – pedro as opposed to pedros)
Now in the cPanel my initial pedroduino.com does not appear at all, the unregistered pedrodigitalsolutions.com appears but only has an empty cgi-bin file associated with it and the registered pedrosdigitalsolutions.com site (which also has WP Responsive installed) appears with all its folders.
I can still modify both the active sites through their respective WP dashboards but I concerned as to why I cannot see my initial site in the cPanel and also if I can somehow remove the inactive pedrodigitalsolutions.com site from the cPanel.
I have obviously done something wrong, but both active sites seem to be working OK and can be modified via their respective WP Dashboards but as I want to set up child theme for both of them I thought that the way it is now may be problematic. Any help or suggestions would be gratefully appreciated. I have posted an image of my cPanel

    Thank you Pedro.

  • Hey Pedro – it looks like you aren’t seeing pedroduino.com install as a folder because it is installed in the root directory.

You should not have any problems removing the pedrodigital folder as it’s just an empty directory.

Thanks Jimmy. I managed to delete the empty pedrodigital folder OK. So just to clarify if I may – My initial site pedroduino.com is located in the root folder In my case /home4/pedro147/public_html My second site pedrosdigitalsolutions.com is located at /home4/pedro147/public_html/pedrosdigitalsolutions.com So the first site you “manage” with your cPanel is in the root directory, and any subsequent sites sit in their own folder which is a “sub folder” of public_html? Here is an image of my folder structure now. https://imgur.com/P9qf9KF
Thanks again for your help Pedro.

Hey Pedro – that sounds pretty much correct.

I’m assuming that you installed WordPress through cPanel using fantastico, or softalicious, or some other method. When installing through this method you will usually have the option to choose where you would like WordPress installed.

You also have to choose which domain you would like wordpress to install to. I believe (but don’t quote me) that the install location is set to install in the root directory of the selected domain by default. So, when you installed wordpress on that second domain, it just installed it into that domains root folder, which is at /home4/pedro147/public_html/pedrosdigitalsolutions.com in your case.

So, assume that pedro.com is your top level domain, with your hosting set up. Your directory structure would look something like this, with / being a directory –

    /www
    (all pedro.com stuff)

When you add another domain or subdomain to your hosting package a new directory is created for it in your root domain. So, assume you add the domain awesomepedro.com, your directory structure would now look like, with / being directory –

    /www (directory)
(all pedro.com stuff, including wordpress install)
    –/awesomepedro.com (directory)
–(all awesomepedro.com stuff, including wordpress install)

It’s really not much different from the folder structure you see on your computer. Your first domain is in your top level, or root folder. Add another domain and another folder is created for it inside of the top level, root folder. The contents of that new folder is the root of the newly added domain.

Does that make sense at all? I feel like i am just being confusing at this point.

Jimmy, you explain things very clearly and although I have a reasonably good level of understanding of root drive/folder/file structure in a PC for example, the folder/file structure with this web stuff still confuses me a little. The first domain pedroduino was installed via Hostgator one click instal https://www.hostgator.com/apps/wordpress-hosting
While the second pedrosdigitalsolutions was installed via fantastico and I was supplied this by them –
” An instance of WordPress was installed on https://pedrosdigitalsolutions.com
Full installation path: /home4/pedro147/public_html/pedrosdigitalsolutions.com ” So in both instances I just let the instals direct to the default locations. When I first open cPanel and get this directory selection box https://imgur.com/niJRfAe if I then fully expand the two instances of Responsive theme I get this https://imgur.com/PHyex9N and I know the bottom one is pedroduino becuse I recently created a responsive-child folder for it. I think with your nice clear explanation I am starting to understand the structure – there is a separate instance of WP for each domain and in my case the first pedroduino is in the root folder and the second domain is in a folder within the root folder. Thanks again for taking the time to help me understand this Jimmy
    Pedro.

Thanks Jimmy I’m pretty sure that I have got a solid understanding now and thanks again for your explanation.
    Pedro.

My pleasure Pedro, I’m really glad to have been able to help. All the best!
