CPT term checkbox not working

Hello
I created a custom post type and a taxonomy for that cpt – when I select a taxonomy term on the post/edit screen the checkbox gets checked – however, when I update the post the term is unchecked again – viewing the post list, the term aren’t there either – however, looking at the term edit page, the post with that term is reflected in the post count for that term?

anybody else having issues – how to fix this?
