• Hi guys,

I’m running 2 WP installations on a virtual machine (vCPU 1 / RAM 2.00 GB / SSD 20 GB). The first website is quite heavy (WooCommerce + lots of plugins), the second one is quite light (no special plugins).

Last week, the server started restarting itself (80 times a day!) with a CPU usage over 200%. I found out that there was a masive bruce force attack on my admin (1200+ unsuccessful login attempts in 24 hours). I disabled the wp-cron.php file, hid the administration and limited the login attempts.

This helped. Still, CPU usage remains quite high (24 hour average is 150%) and the server keeps restarting 5-10 times a day.

Any thoughts on this? Have you ever experienced something similar?

Thank you in advance for your help!

  • You’d be better off looking at setting up a firewall on the server instead of anything that’s WordPress-bsaed. What you use will depend on your server type and your experience in setting these things up.

The reason for that is that a server firewall is very light-weight (as far as resource usage goes) compared to having the system load up Apache (or similar) and processing everything needed for the base WordPress system before even checking anything to see if it’s a brute force attack.
