Create a navigation out of event categories?

I’ve been experimenting to see if I can create a navigation (similar to wp_list_categories in the main codex) of the event categories.
Ideally I’d like to add this to a template file rather than a shortcode on a page.
Is is possible to create a navigation from event categories?
