• Hello, this is my website – https://www.qualitytimeerrands.com/roadsidewaiters/
One topic: creating a text bar (navigation, banner, menu)

I would like to create a text bar above or below the header with the following words across, “lockouts, jump starts, tire changes”. Along with a link to those pages.

    1. what is the correct name for this? “text bar”, “banner”, “navigation bar”, menu”.. so I can search properly next time.

    2. I’ve been trying figure out how to get rid of the menu buttons (home, our services, contact roadside waiters) that are above the header. Can I do this somewhere in the menus or pages without deleting the black navigation bar below the header? I want to keep the black navigation bar.

    3. Can I replace the home, our services, contact roadside waiters that’s above the header with just text i want, “lockouts, jump starts, tire changes”?

    Thanks for your time.

  • 1. That sounds like a navigation menu to me.

    2. You will probably need to start customising your theme’s header.php template file – possibly via a child theme. Unfortunately your chosen theme is not released under GPL. Non GPL products are not welcome in the WordPress community. Official WordPress policy states that all plugins and themes that are publicly released are required to adhere to https://www.ads-software.com/about/gpl/ Any support requests for non-GPL products are usually ignored, in the interests of supporting the community and its freedoms.

What? This is a wordpress theme. I didn’t know all this when i chose it. At the time I was looking for a theme with certain features and one that i could customize.

I got this theme from https://newwpthemes.com

Are you saying that I can only get help from them?

Yes. The themes that they offer are not released under GPL. Frankly, I’d recommend that you switch to another theme.

Ok! I’m open to suggestions. But, seriously? Do you know how long I’ve been working on this thing. They have alright support, but I’m having a really hard time finding anything on google about this theme. Nothing, no youtube videos or anything, frustrating. So what do you think is a better option?

I’ve spent weeks with thing you know and had a feeling I needed something with more support and youtube videos.

    My criteria for a theme:
3 columns with left and right sidebar; customizable header for my header, phone number and other text; customizable background, colors.

I started with the Atahualpa Theme for my other site, but halted that, it’s a little hard. Lots of support for this theme.

I would like something simpler. I can learn anything if I had more time. This thing just needs to get up and going right away.

    Thanks.

I am sorry but this is forum policy. I’d also strongly recommend that you have a read of this article on downloading themes. It illustrates, in part, why this policy exists.

Ok, I’ve read it, but for a newby, what does it all mean?

Are you saying that I should stay clear of the themes on https://newwpthemes.com?

I’m using SuperWP 1.0 Theme. If it’s junk and my website would be compromised, then I would gladly dump it because I don’t have time to waste on this anymore. A legitimate theme with support is what i need.

Are you saying that I should stay clear of the themes on https://newwpthemes.com?

Yes. In my opinion, they are not a trusted theme supplier. There are some excellent themes on https://www.ads-software.com/extend/themes/ with superb support. Suffusion and Responsive spring to mind but I’m sure there are many more that you could choose from.

Are you saying that I should stay clear of the themes on https://newwpthemes.com?

Absolutely. Stay far away from sites like that:

    1. They mis-apply the Creative Commons license, by claiming that CC-By means that they can require you to display arbitrary links
    2. They include spammy footer links
    3. They include kill code that will prevent the Theme from working if you modify the footer links
    4. They use encryption to hide the footer link code
    5. They hide their spammy footer links from their demo
    6. They want you to pay for a link-removal license, just to use their Themes without displaying spammy links

Stay far, far away from such sites, and the Themes they distribute.

I was trying to be diplomatic about it but Chip is absolutely right. Please do stay away from this theme site.

Thanks for your honesty, Esmi and Chip. Since I’m so close to finishing, I thought about launching with this theme. But after so much feedback, I really don’t want any trouble with my site.

Yes I’ve done research, but it’s hard to find a simple theme that I can edit in the next few days.

I didn’t find anything on ThemeLab. Is Leland still running this site and what do you know about support there?

Do you recommend any other source for free wordpress themes?

Do you recommend any other source for free wordpress themes?

I would start with the official Theme repository:
    https://www.ads-software.com/extend/themes

You’ll find many, many Themes that meet your stated criteria:

3 columns with left and right sidebar; customizable header for my header, phone number and other text; customizable background, colors.
