• I asked over the weekend but had no response – hoping there’ll be someone around who can answer now it’s Monday ??

    I’d like to have:
    – most posts on my blog available for the world to read
    – some posts on my blog available for only certain people to read

Using the User Level plugin, I can require that people be registered, but they still can’t see level 1 posts unless I make them level 1 – at which point they also gain some admin privileges. How can I change this so they can only see the posts and their own profile? I know this *can* be done, because I’m a level 4 user on another blog, but see only posts and my profile – and I found a hack which (it seems) would do this on WP 1.2, but I can’t figure it out for the current version.

    TIA

Did that – it seems to only work until I promote them to level 1, and does nothing about allowing them access to view the “manage comments” pages etc.

Anyone help on this one? I’d like to get it sorted before my baby arrives (due last Tuesday)….LOL

Okay, I figured this out so I’m posting a reply to myself, in case someone else looks it up.

In the wp-admin folder, there is a file called menu.php. Open that and you can see the minimum user level required to do each thing. I believe this file may be replaced with upgrades though, so you might have to re-do it each time you upgrade (though it’s only a two-minute job, so not a big deal really).

If you check out the codex page on user levels, you’ll find that a level 1 user can view the things you cited but only his own. So, the level 1 user can’t edit someone else’s comments, for example. I think you’re panicking because you see “Manage Comments” when there’s really nothing to panic about.

No, I can see that a level 1 user can’t edit comments – but they can, for example, pick up email addresses from those who’ve left comments. All I wanted was a user who was registered and could see more than just the “completely public” posts, but no more than that. Since I’ve achieved that now, I’m happy (tho I’d be even happier if this stubborn baby would arrive LOL)

Somewhat OT but congrats for the new baby in advance ?? Hope everything goes well.

    Thanks for this! ??

When did the baby arrive and tell about the stats! Boy, girl??

I have been looking for this information for some time. Thanks!!!

LOL – just picked up that there were more replies to this thread, and not sure if chimommy has been looking for info re user levels or my new kid, but anyway – baby arrived August 7th, boy (fifth one!), healthy and gorgeous, now 3 months old and a delight ??
