Create new directories on the fly while uploading files?

I was wondering if it might be possible for a logged in user to create a directory (within one of the base directories) on the fly while using the upload file form. This would mean not inserting the sub directory name in the shortcode, but instead typing it into the directory field to create it that way, then uploading file into it.
