• Hi Smush Support,

As it is currently, the Smush plugin defeats one of it’s own purposes by making the original image folder larger. I understand that server optimized images to speed up a site is the main goal but I just smushed a site and it created 22 copies of each image causing the file size to go from 4 GB to 5.2 GB. This is after DELETING the originals. Is it possible to create an option, a checkbox for example, to just create one copy of the original image instead of bloating the uploads folder?
    Example: https://imgur.com/a/cxFhKpe

If it had that option it would be 5 stars and I would use it on all my sites. As it is now I have to restore a backup and delete it.

    Cheers,
    Adam

    Hi @adamnova,

    Thanks for using our plugin.
Basically, reSmush.it lean on WordPress mechanisms for creating variations of the original images. It uses the different images variations (called image sizes) installed on your website (generally displayed here : yourwebsiteurl/wp-admin/options-media.php).

When resmush.it plugin is performing optimizations, it asks WP which image sizes are used, and will optimized all these aspects. If you have this large amount of images sizes, you should have a theme that uses them, or maybe a plugin that has created a large quantity of images sizes.

The increase of the library is, in my opinion due to the backup we’re performing when creating the optimization (it creates a -unsmushed file for each original file before optimizing it). This is useful if you optimize your whole library with a too agressive image quality factor (< 70) and that you want to increase it to enhance image quality. If you keep a good quality factor (~90), you can disable backups in the plugin options, and delete backups files (button proposed in the plugin dashboard). Then, it will reduce your library size.

Last, but not least, the main intest of such plugins, as you said, is mainly to bring to your visitors the best user experience ever by lowering image size, and thus, the loading time. The cost of hosting is now hopefully pretty affordable.

    Hope this helped,
    Kind regards,
    Charles
