Creating a child theme

Hi,

If I want to create a child theme do I have to take the existing style.css and function.php files and copy them into the new folder (named child theme), and then call the newly name style sheet from function.php?

I ask because I haven’t created a child theme before. I saw that themegrill has made flash child theme templates available but these are totally blank. I looked at my style and function files and these are full of code so I don’t want to lose what is currently there. I also have a lot of ‘additional’ css in my wordpress editor which I don’t want to lose.

Could somebody advise how I would go about setting up a child theme and keeping all this code?
