creating a directory with WP software?

  • Do you guys think it’s possible to create a basic yet robust directory using WordPress blog software?

    Here is what I have in mind;

    I want to create a business directory for my business friends.
    Categories such as financial services, law, web design, etc.. would exist on the blog as categories.
    People can then submit their blurb about their business along with website url as a new post entry.
    Other friends of theirs who know and like their services can then submit a comment saying, “yeah, he has a great web design business” as a comment to their blog entry.

    The main reason I want to consider WP as a business directory is to allow a type of social commentary that allows other people to say, “Hey, this guy offers a great service for his business and I’ve bought from him.” In a way, let’s say there are 5 financial advisors who submit their blurb. And you are looking for an advisor. The one who has alot of comments can help faciliate that decision for the prospect.

  • Can’t see why you couldn’t do that and you wouldn’t really have to majorly hack anything either, you would just have to give new users the right level to be able to save drafts.

    yeah, i’d figure as much. i’m trying to go for sort of an open source business directory ala DMOZ.

    The only difference is that I wish to use the comments feature as a way to distinguish to reward those who have sold to others and as such, deserves good online word of mouth, so to speak.

    I’m new to WP, so I’m just learning my way around. I’m trying to do something similar to lone007. I want to build a resource directory. Is there a plug in that works best?

    Here’s a great directory plugin that works on the Joomla.com platform: https://www.mosets.com/tree/.

    Someone should put this together for WordPress. I’d be willing to fund it. Anyone?
