• Hi, I am trying to edit the main header menu on my site.
The default menu has all the pages there with the dropdown boxes for each page.

There are 3 pages that I would not like on the main menu so I have created a side menu for them. These 3 pages are still on the main header menu. Is there a way to take them off but still have them in a side menu or just as a link and not have them as a parent page?

I have tried creating a new header menu with the pages needed but, the new menu does not come with all the drop down boxes automatically. Only the parent pages.

  • What theme are you using? Where did you download it from?

It is the theme ‘NewsFrame’ this was an available theme from wordpress. I did not instal it.

Do themes have individual restrictions when it comes to menus? I thought the same restrictions and limits applied to all themes.

Yes, themes can have menu restrictions. Can you include a link with some specifics on what you’re looking for? Example: “I want potato chips to be a drop down menu of food”

    The link is here. https://absbilingualschool.com/ABSgradesnews/

As you can see from the site, I have all the pages at the top.
I would like pages ‘Grades 1 – 8’ across the top only. Then I would have other pages on the right hand side.

I have tried making a new menu for the top but it did not carry all the drop down boxes with it.
Under each grade, there will be around 32 different drop down boxes. The new menu does not automatically carry them over.

Is there a way to remove ‘contact’, ‘Welcome’, ‘Newsletter’ and ‘Events’ from the main header menu but to keep them in the sidebar on the right?

    Thanks

I honestly don’t know how much of this is going to be theme specific. You “should” be able to layer your pages like THIS EXAMPLE

My theme, I believe, allows inherently for 2 menus. By that I mean I can have 2 different menu areas right out of the box. One on top and one on the side for example. That may not be the case with yours but you seem to have overcome that with the links on the right hand side.

You also ‘should’ be able to just remove the pages you don’t want in the top from the menu completely and leave access to them on the side the way they are.

I was able to recreate this functionality on my blog AS SEEN HERE using that method, but I use Headway Themes which allows for far more customization out of the box than do most. Hopefully this helps.

Thank you for the response. The reason why I did not want to create the new header menu is because it does not inherent any of the drop down boxes automatically. I can add all the drop down boxes manually but I will be adding 10+ dropdown boxes a week.

Is there a way to keep the header menu I have now but remove 3 or 4 pages from it as they are already displayed on the right sidebar?

I can’t think of anything. The only thing I can say is that since you’re already creating a new page for each grade each week, if you really want it that way you may have to add each page to the menu independently.

Sorry I can’t be of more help. Maybe someone else can step in here.

I would, if I were you, consider eliminating the pages for each week and turning them into posts so you not only need less pages, but it will flow more naturally. This would most likely require custom post types or an organized taxonomy and a way to manipulate the loop. My theme gives me that option inherently, but maybe something like LoopBuddy if you don’t want to code it out.

Sorry I can’t help you more with this. I hope you find a way to get what you’re looking for.

I managed to find a quick fix for it but I’m sure it’s not the best way.

I marked the unwanted pages from the main header menu as “draft” instead of “published”.
They were removed from the header menu but remained in the side bar.
    Just what I needed.
