Before I start initiating an SSL transfer, I would love some feedback.

I have multiple WP sites all on a grid container hosted at Media Temple. I have SSH access, but not the sudo command capabilities.

Will there be foreseeable issue in transferring my sites to SSL. I attempted to use certbot, but I think it is beyond my technical knowledge to go that route.

    Thanks very much

    Henry

    Hi @silsurf,

does your site have a control panel like cPanel/Plesk? If so, you can generate an SSL certificate using Really Simple SSL following these instructions: https://really-simple-ssl.com/install-ssl-certificate/

I do not have access to Plesk or cPanel

    Thanks,

You can generate a certificate in the plugin, but without plesk or cpanel you’ll need to install it manually on the server. You need to install the certificate each time it is renewed, every 90 days.

    Hello, Henry!!

According to my experience the SSL certificate is very important. And I prefer free Let’s Encrypt lately, as you say, because it is free /of course ??

    As you can see here:
    https://www.icdsoft.com/en/ssl
    https://www.scalahosting.com/blog/lets-encrypt-activated-servers/

Some hosting companies are using control panels different than Plesk or cPanel and they support automatic installation and activation /and auto installation each 3 months/ so you need to do nothing – just choose to use the encrypted SSL version of your web-site.

Or you just can write to the support to activate it.

Paid SSL are great, there is one problem with them only – their activation took about 24 hours .. During this time the web-site is shown as unsecured ??

    Good luck!

We have listed several hosting companies, and how they handle SSL.
    https://really-simple-ssl.com/install-ssl-certificate/

A lot of hosting companies offer SSL activated by default, for free. On some environments you need to activate it manually. Others require additional payment.

The Let’s Encrypt SSL generation in Really Simple SSL is meant for users who do not have a hosting provider which offers free SSL. If the host uses cPanel or Plesk, it can be renewed automatically. Otherwise, you’ll need to do that manually.

If your hosting company does not offer free SSL, without cPanel or Plesk, you might want to consider switching to a hosting company that does offer this option.

    Hope this helps.
