• Is there a plugin or other method of creating a static version of a WP site that we could burn onto a CD and ship w/software?

    Any ideas are welcome.

I would use wget to download a local static “mirror” of the site, thus saving it all as static HTML files. Then you could put those on the CD. This way the computer running the CD would not need to run Apache or a database or anything else, just a browser.

    Thanks, Otto42!

Could this same approach be used to produce a completely static site, which could then be served by apache or another web server?

Like xyzzy, I would like to know how to “retire” a site. I want to leave it live for reading, but not have to update the WP versions anymore since it is closed to new posts and comments. Are there certain files to remove that would prevent security problems in the future? Something added to .htaccess? Any help appreciated.

The same approach I suggested before could be used to make a completely static version of a site and put onto any normal webserver.

Google for “wget mirror” for tutorials on how to do it.
