Credit Card Payment Fail

We are having issues where intermittently credit card payments will stall after a customer has their information entered and clicked “Pay Now”.
The wheel will spin on screen for a while then revert back to the original checkout screen to start over without a confirmation.
On the back end those orders are flagged as failed.
I should add these are known good cards. It is not a situation of payment being declined.
How do we make this a more consistent process?
