Credit Metadata on Gallery Captions?

Currently only ‘caption’ shortcode is supported; we’ll schedule ‘gallery’ support for one of upcoming plugin releases.

This is great news. In the meantime, can you steer me in the right direction on the function/filter part of the question? (I have a site launch this week and would love to write a plug-in or function to enable this until it gets rolled into the main build)

… and made the necessary changes.
