One of the sites I look after had the following error

There has been a critical error on this website.

    I also received an email

Since WordPress 5.2 there is a built-in feature that detects when a plugin or theme causes a fatal error on your site, and notifies you with this automated email.

In this case, WordPress caught an error with one of your plugins, Jetpack by WordPress.com.

I managed to be able to disable the jetpack plugin and the site restores itself. I made no other changes other than disabling the jetpack plugin.

    WordPress version 5.7
Current theme: MCFS-theme (version 1.1.3) (custom theme)
Current plugin: Jetpack by WordPress.com (version 9.5)
    PHP version 7.2.34

I’m having the exact same error. I wonder why I use Jetpack at all since this is the second time in 2021 there has been a critical error while using the plugin. Come on – what is the fix, Jetpack??

I just came here to see if anyone is facing the same problem. and It seems that I am not the only one facing this error when using Jetpack.

@erania-pinnera I can’t enable the plugin anymore. It has the following error when I try to enable the plugin. I’ve made my dev site public so you can view the issue. This is the error when the plugin tries to load.

    `Fatal error: Uncaught Error: Call to undefined method Jetpack::module_configuration_screen() in /home/mcfs/dev.mcfs.org.uk/wp-content/plugins/jetpack/modules/manage.php:34 Stack trace: #0 /home/mcfs/dev.mcfs.org.uk/wp-content/plugins/jetpack/class.jetpack.php(1995): include_once() #1 /home/mcfs/dev.mcfs.org.uk/wp-content/plugins/jetpack/class.jetpack.php(3313): Jetpack::load_modules() #2 /home/mcfs/dev.mcfs.org.uk/wp-content/plugins/jetpack/class.jetpack.php(3219): Jetpack::plugin_initialize() #3 /home/mcfs/dev.mcfs.org.uk/wp-includes/class-wp-hook.php(292): Jetpack::plugin_activation(”) #4 /home/mcfs/dev.mcfs.org.uk/wp-includes/class-wp-hook.php(316): WP_Hook->apply_filters(”, Array) #5 /home/mcfs/dev.mcfs.org.uk/wp-includes/plugin.php(484): WP_Hook->do_action(Array) #6 /home/mcfs/dev.mcfs.org.uk/wp-admin/plugins.php(193): do_action(‘activate_jetpac…’) #7 {main} thrown in /home/mcfs/dev.mcfs.org.uk/wp-content/plugins/jetpack/modules/manage.php on line 34

    Hey @pbrumby,

Thanks for sharing the error. Could you do the following and then get back to me with your findings?

    – Update PHP to the latest version
    – Delete Jetpack completely and reinstall it – the new update has just been released. To remove Jetpack, you can FTP into your site and delete the folder wp-content/plugins/jetpack.
After that’s done, you can reinstall Jetpack by following these instructions.

You may want to try that in your staging site and then in your production site if all looks good in the staging environment. Let me know how you get on!

    Thanks @erania-pinnera

The latest version of jetpack (9.6) did the trick. Once that updated the error went away which meant I didn’t have to do anything drastic.
