• After receiving the latest wordpress update, I have got a critical error message.

    I followed the steps provided in the link and deactivated all the plugins. And it worked again. I followed the steps and activatd each plugin one by one. Some plugins were obvious to create this error others not so much. The latter means: It seems I can watch the frontend, but plugin on an article and risk another critical error message. Though not soooo clear which plugin does create this error at all. Or if it is wordpress itself.

    Though not soooo clear which plugin does create this error at all.

    When you re-active the plugins, you need to do it one-by-one while checking for the error, as in:

    1. Activate 1 plugin.
    2. Check to see if the error came back.
    3. If not, activate another plugin.
    4. Check to see if the error came back.

    And so on.

    When the error returns, the plugin you activated before it appeared is the cause.

    install health check plugin which can be used in troubleshooting mode to deactivate all plugins and theme – might help narrow down the source of the issue (public view site will not be impacted)

    does your webhosting vendor offer a “one click staging site” — if yes, you can test plugins in at staging site too.

    @macmanx Thanks, that’s what I did. Either after the update unfortunately several plugins are broken or the update causes errors. Sometimes even with de-activated plugin the error occured.

    @contentiskey Thanks. Will re-install it.

    Hey @aclys Health check might be a good solution for you. In addition to the excellent suggestions offered above, may I also suggest that you take a look at the error message(s) you see (if any). Especially if it’s a Fatal Error message – it might share clues as to which plugin(s) may have caused this issue, thus helping your troubleshooting process a tad easier.

    @harishanker – It’s a critical error. For me, it’s something different. And where does it say something about it? In the logs? They shouldn’t be on 24/7 and weren’t during this event. I haven’t installed any additionally plugins (for site’s health) because I already have “a lot” of them active and running and because I thought wordpress does log errors somewhere save and easy to access. Wrong conclusion from me. I made them because in the dashboard area since some versions of wordpress you can see health state of the site, site’s being checked aka site-health.php or something like that. But it doesn’t.
