    If a site suffers a critical error the notice states that the site admin should receive an email with an means to access the admin page to help resolve the issue.

    I have sen a number of help requests where site owners say they have not received this email so could not access their site.

    I am wondering if this email is being sent out or if there is some bug stopping it from being issued.

    I appreciate it may be that the site owner has omitted to update the admin email so can no longer receive this but it does seem to be a common issue I have noticed recently with people asking for help outside of WordPress Org.

  • This email may not reach the recipient for very many reasons. Many of them also mean that the project could not send any emails to anyone. Reasons include:

    • Hosting does not allow email to be sent. In that case the administrator should install an SMTP mail plugin.
    • The receiving email server refuses to receive emails for various anti-spam protection reasons. Again, an SMTP mail plugin would be the best solution.
    • The error that occurred also affects the e-mail sending itself, which could result in no e-mail being sent at all.

    All in all, an administrator should make sure that the WordPress project can send emails. The technical conditions for this are beyond the control of a WordPress installation, which is why WordPress cannot check, set up and manage this itself.

    Yes, I appreciate all these possibilities. I had just noticed an unusual number of these cropping up on Upwork since the 6.2 core update so I did wonder if that might have caused a bug. No real way of checking as my sites generally work without problems.

    No, as I said, this is not something WordPress can control. If there is an apparent accumulation, it can also be due to anti-spam updates at the mail providers or updated settings on the hosting for sending mail.

    Sorry but I think you are missing the point. Of course WordPress cannot control whether the email is ever received but WordPress does control whether the mail is actually ever issued.

    That was my question. Due to what appeared to be an uptick in the number of people with critical errors not receiving any email made me wonder if, for some reason, it was not being sent out even though the error notice was saying it had been.

    As already written above: if the error that occurred is so severe that the mail dispatch is not triggered or the error occurred during the mail dispatch itself, no e-mail can be sent. There is no other way to formulate this as a general statement, since whenever a PHP error occurs, the further processing processes cannot always be controlled.
