When going to ‘Appearance -> Widgets’ in the Admin section the following error occurs:
There has been a critical error on this website. Please check your site admin email inbox for instructions.

When disabling the Image Source plugin the problem disappears. I’m using WordPress 5.9.2 and Image Source Control Lite Version 2.5.0. I noticed in the changelog of the plugin there was an issue the Widgets page in the past so maybe the problem reappeared in a newer version.

    Hey @thecrazytourist,

    thanks for reaching out.

Did you receive the email with the error that the message is talking about? It should contain the information about what broke and would help me a lot to take a closer look.

    Thanks,
    Thomas

    Hi Thomas,

This is the info in the email:

    Howdy!

Since WordPress 5.2 there is a built-in feature that detects when a plugin or theme causes a fatal error on your site, and notifies you with this automated email.

In this case, WordPress caught an error with one of your plugins, Image Source Control.

When seeking help with this issue, you may be asked for some of the following information:
    WordPress version 5.9.2
    Current theme: GeneratePress (version 3.0.4)
Current plugin: Image Source Control (version 2.3.1)
    PHP version 7.4.25

    Error Details
    =============
An error of type E_ERROR was caused in line 69 of the file /www/thecrazytourist_746/public/wp-content/plugins/image-source-control-isc/includes/gutenberg/gutenberg.php. Error message: Allowed memory size of 268435456 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 20480 bytes)

Thanks, @thecrazytourist, that is very helpful!

The error could be a timeout due to a large image library. Can you say how many images your media library already hosts?

    Thanks,
    Thomas

I’m now at almost 64000 so quite big.

    Thanks for your reply!

I’d love to use the opportunity and ask you a couple of questions concerning your operation of Image Source Control, if you don’t mind.

I reckon you have used ISC without issues for quite some time before this problem appeared—please correct me if I’m wrong.

If I’m right, yours seems to be a more extreme use case—considering the size of your media library—and I am sure you could help me improve the plugin to better handle larger sites:

    – What rough percentage of your 64k images would you say has image credit info attached to it?
    – Did you use the ISC input fields for short text strings, as I had in mind, or did you fill in long strings, like exceptionally long source URLs or large texts instead of short source names?
    – Is there anything else you can think of that, in your view, might be a deviation from the intended use of ISC?

Thank you very much for your feedback, I really appreciate it.

Yes I’ve used quite some time without issues, but I don’t know when the issue with the Widgets page started as I don’t visit it often.

Almost all my images have image credit info, many of them don’t have the URL though because we only need to provide name/source when we buy a license for the image. Source urls are just the typical length I guess and the descriptions are short as well. At the moment everything seems to work fine except for the widgets page.

If it helps you improve the plugin we could do a skype where I walk you through it or have you explore the backend.

    Hey @thecrazytourist!

Thank you so much for the info and for offering the “tour” on your site’s backend. I think that won’t be necessary. Just a quick update from me:
We are preparing a possible fix right now and will run it through thorough tests next. Please hang in there, we’ll come back with more details after we’re finished with those.

Talk to you soon, have a nice weekend!

    Hey @thecrazytourist,

I just uploaded a dev version with a potential fix.

Would you mind downloading this version and let me know if it fixes the issue?

    Thanks,
    Thomas

    Hi Thomas,

I have downloaded and installed the version but unfortunately it still gives the same error.

    Thx,
    Jan.

    Hey Jan,

    thanks for testing.

Does this line exist as well in the error, including the reference to line 69?

    > An error of type E_ERROR was caused in line 69 of the file /www/thecrazytourist_746/public/wp-content/plugins/image-source-control-isc/includes/gutenberg/gutenberg.php. Error message: Allowed memory size of 268435456 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 20480 bytes)

If so, please check again if you are running the dev version and not the official release, because this line does no longer exist in the new version.

    Thanks,
    Thomas

This is the error in my error log:

PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 268435456 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 20480 bytes) in /www/thecrazytourist_746/public/wp-includes/wp-db.php on line 2854″

    Thanks for your quick reply!

How many images do you have in your sidebar? Is there anything special about the sidebar, e.g., do you have more than one or any features that could load many images?

    Thanks,
    Thomas

I have 4 images in the sidebar so that’s not that much. I can’t think of anything that would load a lot of images there.

As a test I disabled the Image Sources plugins and then removed all the widgets on the widgets page (even the in the inactive block) and saved it. After enabling the plugin again the error still occurs so it doesn’t seem to be related to any of the active Widgets.

    Hello Thomas,

I did another test. I installed the Classic Widgets plugin and after activating I can access my widgets without any problems. I will leave it activated but I can still help figuring out the error if you need me to do any tests.
