  • If you have avatar uploads enabled for Contributors and Subscribers, you can resize the images and crop them automatically on upload. You can also allow them to edit the images with the Media Library image editing tools. Authors, Editors, and Administrators automatically have access to these tools, too.

I know, but subscribers should be enable to do this (and forced) when uploading the image. The WP editor is way too much advanced.

For Example, it should be like this:
    https://cdn.smugmug.com/img/help/digital-photos/zooming-thumbnail-4.jpg

The first option you suggest is auto crop, but then the user cannot choose his or his face (or something else in the image) to focus it on. See the example again. Only a part of the image is used as an avatar and square ??

I will keep it in mind. It is possible that there is another avatar plugin that has those features. (I don’t know every plugin.) I say this only because it would be a fairly large feature to add, and I would have to see how much time I could devote to it. I develop this plugin on my own time.
