    Has there been any research or development on updating CE to parse CSS code to provide WEBP image support for CSS defined images?

    IMO, this is a pretty big issue. Background images are defined in CSS all the time and being they are background, are normally larger in dimensions than most other images on a site. That’s something the WEBP could definitely help out with.

    As it happens, WebP Express does support the replacement of background images as defined in CSS or loaded dynamically via JScript.
