    How can I mimic the CSS background and hover color changes for the ‘donate’ menu link?

    Hello,

    On the Appearance > Menus page you can add the “menu-special” (without quotes) special CSS class to any top-level item.

    It’s important to note that in order to see that field, you have to enable CSS Classes in Screen Options

    Yes, WordPress by default hides that, it’s not the theme’s doing.
