Cure for a Hiccup? (500 Server Error)

  • Greetings!

    I am using a BlueHost account to host a WordPress blog. The blog is currently down, and I don’t know why.

    When I visit the site (from any computer) I get the following message:

    “500 Server Error – A misconfiguration on the server caused a hiccup. Check the server logs, fix the problem, then try again.”

    Other pages hosted on the website at this domain are fine. I can even get into the Site Admin pages for the blog. But the blog itself won’t load. My SiteMeter page shows zero visitors since the problem began yesterday.

    I logged into my BlueHost account and checked the databases. They are all fine. I checked the error logs. They included this:

    PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function: get_header() in /home/XXX…XXX/index.php on line 1

    And this:

    PHP Warning: shell_exec() [function.shell-exec]: Unable to execute ‘checksuexec’ in /home/XXX…XXX/500.php on line 12

    (With XXX…XXX being the file directory for my blog.)

    This is all gibberish to me.

    Can anyone tell me what I need to do to get my blog back up?

    did you take a look at the file, to see what’s on line 1? Maybe something happened there. It should just say <?php

    It says:

    <?php get_header(); ?>

    That’s the theme index file, that’s fine like that. Look at the wordpress index.php as well.

    I don’t the path given to you by the error, because it was just indicated as xxx…xxx, but you will know which index file it is, by following that path.

    Also, if you can log in, from your dashboard, try disabling all plugins, and see if one was acting funny.

    If you cannot log in, rename the plugin folder to something else on your server, to deactivate them.

    I just upgraded to WordPress 2.7.1. and I’m still having the issue.

    I disabled my plugins.

    I was looking at the wrong error log before. The items dated today were in a different list. I have pasted them all below in the hopes that someone can decipher them and suggest what I should do.

    Still, I would think that upgrading the files should have fixed this. But it did not.

    Any thoughts?

    Looking online for this error, I got this:

    SoftException in Application.cpp:252: File is writeable by group
    Solution If you’re getting this error then it is related to having a file chmod’ed to 0777.
    Simply change the permissions on the file to 755. You do not need the file to be 777.

    About your error log, from what I have seen online, searching for the statements on your log, it could be a PHP misconfiguration on your server. Some cases involved migrating from PHP 4 to PHP 5.

    Maybe someone else in this forum, more expert in this, can help you further. I would start by asking your ISP.

    The one thing that leaves me wondering (assuming that consultants.pamper-party is your own domain), is that last one (unusualgambling), the full url leads to a blank page… a hack attempt? I am not sure, though.

    Some of those logs you pasted don’t seem related to your site. If you are using the “Main” Error log from the Error logs in your cPanel, that shows the errors of all users on the server and not just you. If it doesn’t have your information in that error log, it probably isn’t your error.
    As to the problems you’re having, try the following. In the cPanel, in the Advanced section, look for an icon titled, Process Manager. Check there to see if you have several processes building up. If you do, see what they are and then kill them all. Also try disabling all Plugins(If they have been enabled again) and switch your theme to the default theme. If that doesn’t fix it, try renaming your .htaccess file. It is a hidden file so you won’t be able to see it unless you have hidden files enabled.
