• Hello,

I recently decided I wanted to start my own blog. Unfortunately, I don’t want to pay anyone for a neat design or coding. I was curious how difficult it is to learn WordPress and to tweak it to make a nice organized design. I recently bought 3-4 books on how to use WordPress.

(WordPress Bible, WordPress : A Quick Visual Guide, WordPress 2.7 Complete, & A Step by Step WordPress Tutorial For Beginners.)

In your experience, was it difficult to pick up WordPress and tweak your own design? If you could tell me how long you’ve been using WordPress and show me an example of what you are capable of doing – I’d appreciate that.

    Thanks,

    Tony

  • You don’t need to pay anyone for a ‘design’. Find a theme at https://www.ads-software.com/extend/themes/ and ‘modify’ one of those.

There’s thousands of free themes. There’s also Theme_Frameworks to consider.

    Thanks Michael.

Out of curiosity, what are the main languages used to tweak wordpress? HTML? XML? PHP? CSS?

    Thanks for the links.

Find a theme that is close to what you want in terms of layout and basic color scheme. Then modify the CSS stylesheet to tweak the look.

Learn how to use the widgets in the sidebar(s), as well as the settings from the Dashboard.

Learn what the PHP opening and closing tags look like so you can find the different elements in the templates. Learn how to move them or comment them out to modify the layout.

What MichaelH and esmi said too.

Thanks for all the helps guys. =] I appreciate it. Now I’m just waiting on my books and I’m sure those will help me understand all the coding to these themes and how to tweak everything else.
