Currency field?

I am creating a “cart” and have a total field displayed. I’m using a text field so that I can make it read only, but how do I format the calculation so that it looks like $xx.xx? I tried adding a $ in the beginning of the formula like this

$(45 + $$field_additionalDonation$$)

It validated it, but instead of the calculation the output says [object Object]
