Current Vulnerability Affecting Thousands of WP Sites?

  • Hi, I’m just wondering if anyone has any idea what is going on with respect to a hack that seems to be happening globally. When I search on it, I only find thousands of hacked sites, but haven’t been able to find any specific discussions of what is going on. Note, I have all the latest versions of WP and plugins installed, plus iThemes Security and some other security tools running, and I had fairly strong passwords (which I’ve just made stronger). It happened in the past few days. As far as I can tell at at superficial glance, my site is still working okay, but the hackers changed the name of the site in the General Settings to this:

    “Hacked By Legion BOmb3r @error SquaD”

    If you search on that string, you’ll find an endless list of sites appearing. Anyone know anything about it, and where the vulnerability in WP might be? Any advice?

    Nope, though as t-p said, your site was hacked. Please follow those links and give that a good read.

    It’s happened to me too. Seems the same. Your post is the only information I can find about it. Thanks for posting. I would be curious to know if there are any other ill effects that result.

    Seems like a self proclaimed artist/hacker operating out of the UAE.

    Yeah, there are some weird youtube videos in their name, too, where they seem to be displaying a wordpress hack in process, with loud abrasive music playing at the same time.

    So did this happen overnight recently and no one but us is talking about it yet? So far I still haven’t seen other damages, and my hosting provider said it happened to a few sites they hosted and asked me to tell them whatever I learned! Definitely, please (anyone!) share back here if you learn more and I will, too.
