• I self host my website on a Synology NAS box and have the domain from GoDaddy. I recently tried to move to Cloudflare CDN and I quickly noticed many of the images wouldn’t load. So I moved back to GoDaddy, which I thought would fix the problem.

Now still, my site frequently crashes, times out and has problems with images. I’ve disabled all plugins and moved to the Twenty Sixteen theme to rule out any of those causing it. I have contacted GoDaddy, Cloudflare and Synology for support to see if there was a problem with the DNS change I reverted back to. They all came to no conclusion on what’s going on. Now I still have all the problems mentioned above and seemingly nothing to go on where to fix! Please help!!

the site seems to be on a server in your house (based on the IP address), so whatever is going on has nothing to do with Cloudflare or GoDaddy.

Your site is showing a 500 error. What are you seeing in the web server logs?

Where would I even find these?

If you’re hosting a site, you’re the system admin. You should know where system logs, server logs, etc are kept. How did you configure your synology box to host a datbase-driven website? I suggest you review that documentation.

500 indicates a PHP error or a basic configuration error. It’s meaning is “Something Bad Happened. Good luck.” ??

So you need the logs to track it down.

Hmm I have no idea where they are kept. Are they in phpmyadmin somewhere? [redacted]

Never offer anyone access to your site or phpmyadmin. You don’t know who we are. Nor am I willing to be liable for anything that might happen to your site.

How does synology host websites? Apache? Nginx? Soemthing else?

If you want to hire a developer, please post something on https://jobs.wordpress.net or (better yet) go to a local WordPress meetup and get face to face with some local WP folks who can help you.

I have no idea… How can I find out for you?

Oh I think it’s nginx and uses MariaDB

OK, here’s a link about error logs
    https://www.nginx.com/resources/admin-guide/logging-and-monitoring/

Look for something about a 500 error — see if you can get a file reference.

Why are you hosting this site from home? Why not use a hosting company?

Because it saves me the money each month and I have a NAS box among other tech that should be able to easily accomodate for one. It’s just a small website that I use as a portfolio.

Ok, just to pick your brains a bit more… I am able to get the site ‘semi-working’ and have occasional crashes by copying and pasting an old backup over all of the existing wordpress config. Surely that can’t be good for the back-end, but it at least has the site up…

    What does semi-working mean?

    Thread Starter CraftedGenius

    (@craftedgenius)

If you access the site, it usually works. Try navigating it and you’ll probably have it crash. If I update plugins, most likely the images disappear (narrowed it down to one or two). The site in general has about 90% chance it works. Still nowhere near perfect.

I suspect that your server gets overloaded and crashes. Given the non-standard nature of your platform, you might do better asking on the synology support site.

I have, they have been of little help. It’s a bit of a weird one because the plugins I use aren’t that resource intensive – unless there are really common ones like Jetpack (I don’t use) that do it? I would have thought if it was overloaded, then disabling all the plugins and themes would have fixed it? I have reduced the number of apps running on the NAS to near minimal too!
