This is a pretty “miscellaneous: question all right! Would be grateful for direction to any more appropriate forum.

Someone I know is going into a three-year meditation retreat, which might even be extended. For ordinary static sites with no e-commerce etc., just paying the domain host ahead for several years should be fairly safe, and the domain-owner address could be any friend or family member.

This person also has several WP sites, all on owned domains. Content will be frozen during this extended retreat, but themes, plugins and perhaps other aspects will need occasional updating for the sites to remain available to the public.

Is there some kind of service other than a law firm or IT mega-firm that can reliably provide this kind of custodial service for an affordable cost? Is the best option to hire an IT-savvy friend and trust that person to remain committed? Other ideas?

I’ll pass along any suggestions that anyone here is kind enough to offer.

I’d say the best option would be to just get a friend up to speed on how the site works and trust them with it, but there are paid services like https://www.wpsitecare.com who could take care of that for you too.

A more low-cost hands-off way though would be to consider moving the site to https://wordpress.com and here’s some details on that: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

You’ll lose the ability to have plugins and themes outside of the few hundred they offer, and adding the domain to the site is an extra cost, but you won’t have to worry about maintaining the site or updating anything. If you choose to do that, follow this guide: https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/

To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and www.ads-software.com are two different entities: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/WordPress_vs_WordPress.com

Thank you for this, James – just the kind of information needed. The first company seems to be typical for pricing: high pice, hih srie. Was hoping fr someting muh heaper with just status-quo mintenance.

WP.com is looking like the best option. Issue there is that they don’t offer the Atathulpa theme, in use on several of the sites in highly customized form – ca. 200 modifications via Atahlpa’s versatile option menu, plus code changes. I guess if that person is able to get an acceptable appearance with some other theme, it might be worth making the change just to get use of WP.com hosting/management. And could always switch back a few years later.

    Thanks again.
