I created a child theme and that’s what I see I’m using on my dashboard.
But when I go into the child theme folder I see only one file: style.css.

Should some of the other files also be there? For example other (html) pages I’ve uploaded, that are mydomain.com/pagename that aren’t in the child folder but the mycms2 folder (which is where 1and1.com puts files). Or other folders such as some plug-ins I’ve added?

Also I want to make a custom 404 page- where do I change the text and where do I put the custom 404 page?

My websites are brainchampagne.com and ivstandup.com, among others.

    Thanks!

    Hey,
A child theme should only have files you add to it. If your wanting to override a template file from the theme you can copy it from the parent theme and add it to your child theme in the same location. for example if you wanted to copy a file from the templates folder of the parent theme you would need to create a templates folder in your child theme to place it.

For a 404 you would copy the 404 template from the parent theme into your child theme and then edit it to how you want.

Thanks. This leads to more questions:

There are a zillion folders. For example with 1and1.com the main folder for WP (and there are folders above this one) is MyCMS2
which has, among others, the following folders:
    wp-admin
    wp-content
    wp-includes

    wp-content has the themes folder
and in that folder are virtue and virtue-child

Do I ever have to think about anything not in either of the virtue folders? (the folders above wp-content)

And it’s possible when I started that I modified a file or two in the parent folder. Might there be a list of files that occasionally get modified? Or should I just look at the date of each and copy anything that’s newer than the others into the child folder?

    Thanks again,

    Hey,
It’s just whats in the virtue theme folder.

Look at the date of modified and copy those into the child theme.

    Hope that helps,

Everything seems to have yesterday’s date (the last time I published my site). Even stuff I know I didn’t modify, like fonts.
And there are a zillion folders and subfolders and subsubfolders.

And of course I’ve forgotten anything I might have modified. Is there a list of files that are sometimes modified?

? I don’t recommend doing any modifying without a child theme. There is no standard list of files people edit? It’s all up to what you might want to change.

What have you changed on the fronted of your site?

Thanks. I have a child theme. I set up my first WordPress site several months ago and don’t remember what I’ve changed. I guess maybe I’ll find out when something gets updated and my site gets messy…

You can download a copy of the theme you have installed so you can look back at the files which may help you if you changed something.
