Custom Domain Blogger to Self-Hosted WP; SEO Implications?

  • Hello,

    I currently have set up WordPress at “boxofficetheory.com/wp”, but would like “boxofficetheory.com” to point to that. Is it best to switch the primary domain to something else, or better to follow these instructions from Bluehost (my host)?:

    I ask because I’m concerned about SEO settings and things of that nature, so I’m wondering what would be best to do.

    (Note: I do have “theboxofficetheory.com” set as a parked domain that redirects to “boxofficetheory.com” currently. I could potentially switch that to being the primary domain instead if I needed to…but I’m not sure if that’s a good idea or not.)

    So, basically, even though I have WP installed in a directory of its own, I’d like for the public/front-end URL to simply show it at “boxofficetheory.com” if that’s possible. How might I make this happen?

  • WordPress doesn’t play well with .htaccess rewrites and it would not be a good idea to try the .htaccess code given.

    Do you ultimately want the new domain to be the main domain anyway? If so it would probably be best to switch your domain, redirect the old domain to the new one, and then let that build up additional SEO rankings from there.

    Or, if you don’t want your site to use a different domain, just move the site files out of the WP directory of its own and directly into the root folder for your boxofficetheory.com domain. Make sure to change your settings in Settings > General so it is set to use the new URL before you move your files. You may want to make a backup first too.

    Then you can just setup a redirect in your old WP folder to the new location, eg. redirect from domain.com/wp to just domain.com so all traffic to domain.com/wp will still come to your site.

    Yes it does. You just have to know what you’re doing (and put your customized rewrites outside the ‘wordpress’ section of the .htaccess. Mine’s filled with custom rewrites and redirects to pull old layouts and URLs into the new world.

    However to do THIS you don’t need to mess with it:
